Giant Killers: How God Calls Us to Confront the Giants in Our Lives
Most of us know the story of David and Goliath. But it is more than a feel-good underdog story. It is a blueprint for how God's people are called to face the spiritual giants in their lives, their families, and their communities. Here is what it means to be a giant killer today.
What Does the Story of David and Goliath Really Teach Us?
In 1 Samuel 17, the Philistine army sent out their champion, Goliath, a warrior over nine feet tall, to taunt the armies of Israel. Day after day, he shouted his challenge and no one answered. The entire Israelite army, including King Saul, was terrified.
Then David showed up. He was not even a soldier. He was the youngest son, sent to bring food to his brothers. But when he heard Goliath mocking God and His people, something rose up inside of Him.
"'Don't worry about this Philistine,' David told Saul. 'I'll go fight him.'" - 1 Samuel 17:32 (NLT)
David did not fight because he was the strongest or the most trained. He fought because he knew his God. He was a worshiper who had spent time in the presence of the Lord, and when the enemy came against that God, He could not stay silent.

Why Did David Win Against Goliath?
David's victory was not about his skill with a sling. It was about his willingness to trust God completely. He could have thrown that stone blindfolded and it still would have found its mark, not because of his aim, but because he said yes to God when no one else would.
Before he released that stone, David declared his confidence out loud:
"'You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven's Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.'" - 1 Samuel 17:45-46 (NLT)
That is not just confidence. That is a man who knows exactly who he serves.

What Does This Mean for Christians Today?
The New Testament makes it clear that this kind of victory is not reserved for Old Testament heroes. It belongs to every believer.
"'No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.'" - Romans 8:37 (NLT)
The "all these things" is your blank to fill in. Whatever giant you are facing, whatever stronghold has had a grip on your family for generations, whatever the enemy has been whispering over your life, overwhelming victory is still yours through Christ.

Are Christians Called to Fight or Just Survive?
There is a big difference between showing up to the battlefield and actually fighting. The Israelite army showed up. They lined up. They looked impressive. But when Goliath stepped forward, they hid.
That is a picture of what much of the modern church has settled for. We show up. We gather. We look the part. But when the enemy taunts, we find something to hide behind.
God did not call His people to simply be present in the battle. He called them to fight it. And here is the key truth that changes everything: you are not fighting to win. The victory has already been secured through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You are fighting to impose a victory that already exists.
In Luke 10, when Jesus sent out 72 disciples and they returned amazed that demons obeyed them, He responded:
"'I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.'" - Luke 10:18-19 (NLT)
Not some of the enemy's power. Not the weaker forces. All of it.

What Are the Characteristics of a Giant Killer?
Drawing from David's example, here are six marks of someone who walks as a giant killer in their everyday life.
1. Giant Killers Know Who They Serve
David was not fighting for Israel's reputation. He was fighting because the living God was being mocked. When you know who you serve, you fight with a different kind of resolve. You are not fighting in your own name. You are fighting in His.
2. Giant Killers Know Who the Enemy Is
When you are clear on who the real enemy is, you stop wasting energy on friendly fire. Gossip, division, church against church, believer against believer: these are not battles worth fighting. They are traps. The enemy loves nothing more than getting God's people to turn on each other. Know the difference between your enemy and your brother.
3. Giant Killers Know Their Source of Authority and Power
"'I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.'" - Matthew 28:18 (NLT)
Jesus has all authority. And He has given that authority to His people. The enemy has no authority except what you hand over to him. If you have handed it over, take it back.
4. Giant Killers Confront Giants
David did not pray that someone else would go. He did not wait for a more qualified person to step up. He walked across the valley, made eye contact with the giant, and made good on his words. It is time for the body of Christ to stop talking about the giants and start confronting them.
5. Giant Killers Know Their Weapons and How to Use Them
David did not put on Saul's armor because it did not fit him. He went with what he knew. Our weapons are God's Word, worship, prayer, biblical community, faith, testimony, and the blood of Jesus. These are not decorations. They are tools for war. Get familiar with them. Practice with them. Use them.
6. Giant Killers Enforce Full Victory
There is no peace treaty with darkness. No negotiated terms. No agreement that says the enemy can keep this corner of your life as long as he leaves the rest alone. Full victory means you are not content to coexist with giants. You pursue and destroy them in the authority of Christ.

What Happens When the Church Agrees With the Giant?
One of the most sobering realities is that sometimes the loudest voices telling us the giants cannot be defeated come from within the church itself. Pastors who have been beaten down. Leaders who have grown tired. Believers who have quietly made peace with the enemy and settled for survival instead of victory.
When the people of God begin to echo the taunts of the enemy, something has gone deeply wrong. We were not called to coexist with giants. We were called to kill them.
If you have been tolerating a spiritual giant in your own life, your marriage, your family, or your mind, today is the day that changes. You do not have to keep living under what has always been. Generational strongholds are not your inheritance. Victory in Christ is.

Life Application
This week, identify one giant you have been tolerating. It might be a pattern of fear, a generational stronghold, a habit of sin, a broken relationship, or a lie you have believed about yourself or God. Stop coexisting with it. Begin to confront it using the weapons God has given you: His Word, prayer, worship, and the community of believers around you. Declare out loud what God says about your situation, and take one concrete step of faith toward the victory that is already yours in Christ.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- What giant have I been tolerating in my life that I have been too afraid or too tired to confront?
- Am I fighting from a posture of victory, or am I still trying to earn a win that Christ has already secured?
- Have I been participating in friendly fire, through gossip, division, or criticism of other believers, instead of focusing on the real enemy?
- Do I actually believe that God has given me authority over all the power of the enemy, or do I treat that as a nice idea rather than a lived reality?
