When the Enemy Strikes Back: What to Do When Your Faith Draws Opposition
When things start going well in your walk with God, it can feel like smooth sailing. But Scripture makes it clear that faithfulness often invites opposition. Understanding why the enemy strikes back, and how to stand firm when he does, is one of the most practical things a believer can learn.
What Does It Mean to Be a "Tip of the Spear" Christian?
The phrase "tip of the spear" comes from military language. It refers to the front point of an attacking force, the first soldiers to engage the enemy. For the church, it means something similar: believers who refuse to sit back while the enemy runs unchecked in their families, cities, and culture.
A Tip of the Spear Christian is not passive. They are dedicated to owning, serving, ministering, and funding the mission God has given to the local church. They go where God calls them, regardless of the size of the opposition.
But here is the part that often catches people off guard: a Tip of the Spear Christian will stir the forces of hell and must be prepared for the enemy to strike back.

What Does the Bible Say About Faithfulness and Opposition?
Second Chronicles 31 tells the story of King Hezekiah, a man who served God wholeheartedly. The final verse of that chapter says:
"In all that he did in the service of the temple of God and in his efforts to follow God's law and commands, Hezekiah sought His God wholeheartedly. As a result, he was very successful."
It would be a great story if it ended there. But it does not.
Chapter 32, verse 1 opens with these words: "After Hezekiah had faithfully carried out this work, King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded Judah."
The pattern is unmistakable. Faithfulness preceded the attack. Success in God's kingdom drew the enemy's attention.

How Does the Enemy Try to Discourage Believers?
In the story of Hezekiah, the enemy did not just show up with an army. He showed up with words. King Sennacherib sent officers to Jerusalem to taunt the people and mock their God. The message was direct and intimidating:
"What are you trusting in that makes you think you can survive my siege of Jerusalem?"
The enemy questioned whether God was real, whether He was powerful, and whether He would actually show up. He tried to convince the people that their faith was misplaced.
This is still the enemy's primary tactic today. He comes after your health, your marriage, your finances, your peace of mind, and your sense of purpose. He stirs up offense, gossip, and division within the body of Christ. His goal is to get believers to back down before they ever realize who they truly are in Christ.

Does God Promise Easy Sailing for Believers?
No. Scripture is clear on this. There is no verse, in any translation, that promises a life of ease simply because you follow Jesus. In fact, the Bible says the opposite.
"We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God." - 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
The promise is not that hard times will not come. The promise is that God will not abandon you in them. There is a significant difference between those two things.
The challenge for every believer is this: will you submit to your feelings, or will you force your feelings to submit to the truth of God's Word?

How Should Christians Respond When the Enemy Attacks?
When Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem faced the full force of Sennacherib's threats, here is what they did. Verse 20 says:
"Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, son of Amos, cried out in prayer to God in heaven."
They prayed. And God responded.
"And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed the Assyrian army with all its commanders and officers. So Sennacherib was forced to return home in disgrace." - 2 Chronicles 32:21
One angel. God did not need an army. He needed one willing people who would cry out to Him instead of collapsing under the pressure of the enemy's voice.
The lesson is simple but profound. When the enemy is loud, get louder in prayer. When the threats feel overwhelming, remember who is actually in charge.

What Does It Mean to Stay Spiritually Armed?
First Peter 5:8-9 gives a direct command:
"Stay alert and watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering as you are."
Staying armed is not a Sunday morning activity. It is a daily discipline. Putting on the armor of God with intentionality, spending time in prayer, building yourself up in the Spirit, and staying alert to the enemy's schemes are not optional extras for serious Christians. They are the baseline.
If you try to stand against the enemy using only your own strength and a few memorized verses, you will struggle. But when the Spirit of God rises up inside of you, it changes how you see people, how you see opposition, and how you respond to the giants trying to take ground in your life.

Are You Called Even If You Are Not in Ministry?
Yes. Absolutely yes.
You do not need to stand on a stage or receive a formal commissioning to be called by God. You are called exactly where you are right now. At your job, in your neighborhood, in your home, in your relationships.
The mistake many people make is waiting for a bigger platform before they step into their purpose. But faithfulness in the small things is what positions you for more. Pride and arrogance keep people stuck. Humility and faithfulness open doors.
If you do not know what your calling looks like, ask God. He genuinely wants you to know. Right where you are is where He has placed you, and you can be effective there if you are willing to say, "God, use me where You have me."

Why Does It Matter That the Church Speaks Up?
The church is not called to be quiet, comfortable, or invisible. Jesus described His followers as salt and light, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Salt preserves. Light exposes darkness. Both require engagement with the world around them.
When believers begin to understand who they are and the authority they carry, it becomes a problem for the kingdom of darkness. That is exactly why the enemy's first move is to hit hard and fast, hoping to scare people into silence before they ever realize what they are capable of.
Do not be surprised when standing for what is right brings pushback. You do not stand for what is right because it is popular. You stand for what is right because it is right.

What If You Feel Like the Enemy Has Already Won?
If this past season has felt like the enemy has beaten you down, left you discouraged, anxious, or ready to give up, here is the truth: that crushing is not going to happen when you are humbled and submitted before the Lord.
"The righteous man falls seven times and gets back up again." - Proverbs 24:16
Seven is not a literal limit. It is a picture of completeness. Keep getting up. Keep believing. Keep declaring the Word of God over your life. God is not looking for perfect people or a perfect church. He is looking for people who are willing to say yes.
And remember this: we are not trying to win a war. We are imposing a victory that has already been won at the cross of Jesus Christ.

Life Application
This week, choose not to back down. Identify one area of your life where the enemy has been loud, whether it is fear, discouragement, a relationship, a health situation, or a temptation to stay silent about your faith. Then take one deliberate, faith-filled action in that area. Pray specifically about it. Declare what God's Word says about it. And stay alert, because the enemy strikes hardest when you are making progress.
Ask yourself these questions as you go into the week:
Ask yourself these questions as you go into the week:
- Am I submitting to my feelings, or am I choosing to submit my feelings to the truth of God's Word?
- Am I putting on the armor of God daily, or only when things feel spiritually convenient?
- Am I being faithful where God has actually placed me, or am I waiting for a bigger opportunity before I engage?
- When the enemy strikes back, is my first response to cry out to God, or to shrink back in fear?
